Laurier String Academy (LSA)
The Wilfrid Laurier String Academy (LSA) offers music instruction for children ages 5 to 18 who wish to study the violin, viola, or cello through a curriculum that includes private and group instruction, theory and master classes, chamber music, and performance opportunities. Instruction is based on the pedagogical philosophies of Mimi Zweig, Dr. Shinichi Suzuki, Paul Rolland, and Ivan Galamian.
LSA students participate in 35 private lessons and 30 group lessons throughout the year. Students may enroll in 30, 45, or 60-minute private lessons, depending on the child’s age, development, and level of proficiency. Group classes are 60 minutes every week and are structured in such a way that students work towards developing ensemble and ear training skills, master class performance experiences, concert etiquette, and social interactions with their peers. Parents are required to attend the private and group lessons and participate in the daily practice. As part of the LSA curriculum, students are encouraged to perform in two solo recitals (December and April), two group concerts (October and May), prepare for Royal Conservatory of Music examinations, and participate in the Kiwanis Music Festival in order to foster performance and memorization skills from a young age. The early years of musical instruction are critical because students establish the technical/musical foundation on which all future artistry develops. In addition, students become engaged in their learning, set healthy goals, experience individualized accomplishments, acquire an increased sense of self-efficacy, and develop lasting friendships with peers who share similar interests. In essence, a priority of the LSA is to nurture the wellbeing of every student.
Students are also required to take a minimum of four lessons throughout the summer months (June, July, and August) to ensure that they maintain their technical/musical proficiency. Lessons are scheduled to accommodate family summer vacations and prior engagements.
